Comino Island - Malta

The weather man promised us a fine day and he was not lying. Blue sky as far as we could see, the sun was beaming a smile at us, and not a single cloud was peaking around the corner. It was the perfect day to go to Comino.

Malta has a few islands around it: Comino, Gozo, and much smaller islands. As we made our way down towards the water, we had to find the most legitimate looking ticket booth for Comino.

Apparently we were on the party boat going over, the remix of Forever Young booming through the speakers. A great way to start an experience! Being the third boat over for the day meant that the whole island felt like ours. The stamp of tourism was in the shape of portable kiosks, ready to serve hot dogs and ice blocks.

It took a few minutes for our eyes to comprehend the beauty that was The Blue Lagoon. The cliffs surrounding are a puzzle of dust and shrubs, creating an extreme contrast to the water. The sky enveloped the sea, making a gradient of every shade of blue. The water was bright and blue, as if stealing the colour from Poseidon himself. The sea was calm, making different colours in the deep pockets of the ocean floor. Yachts were out and about, housing the rich and the famous.

We decided to walk around the island first. Up on the highest point was an old fortress. There are many identical ones around the different islands and they come with an excellent 360 view.

The sun was starting to sizzle, so it was time for a swim. I had just found out that there were black, menacing snakes lurking in the shadows of Comino; I stepped wearily through the dusty path. We passed an old school that was now used as housing. The school was only used for a short amount of time, and the reason for closing was that all the school aged children had grown up. No one else to teach!

Santa Maria was our first stop. Luscious waves lapping up the sun, calling to us to swim. There were happy children splashing, and tiny dogs trying to join in. After enough lazing, we set off for the next port of call - The next beach.

Clambering around the rocks, we managed to find our way around to the next path. Here were so many nooks and crannies that will be normal for locals, but are like tiny cracks into paradise for us. The colour of blue changed with the depth of the water.

By this point in the day, we were turning into crisps. We were sporting the most fashionable t-shirt on the head look as we came around the bend, to the pink hotel called Comino Hotel. This is where the rich and the famous who were on the boats earlier would be staying. Not many people were around, and the luxurious Lagoon was calling. We decided to ignore the 'hotel guests only' sign and find a warm rock to sunbathe on.

This lagoon had the most amount of blue, turquoise and aqua-marine that I have ever seen. The rocks paved a path for us to enter the water - an inviting cool down. I felt like a mermaid in our own secret grotto, my brain couldn't comprehend the beauty of it all. No photo could do it justice! When a large group of rowdy people turned up, it was time to leave.

We had nearly walked half the island and were back to the Blue Lagoon. What was an empty, delightful sight this morning was now like seeing sardines packed into a tin. Barely room to move, let alone swim. The paths were packed with everyone trying to find somewhere to sit, this place made Oxford street seem like a quiet Sunday stroll. So some advice that should be taken: The Blue Lagoon is a very popular destination. Get there early and soak up all the glory before everyone else has the same idea!

The ferry in the way back does a sight see of all the caves that you cannot reach by foot. This allowed us to say our farewells and send our gratitude towards the island of Comino.
