Another perfect bluebird day, not a cloud in the sky, only hungry grumbles in our bellies. We set off for Gamla Uppsala, the old historic village. First stop was a trip to a supermarket, another one of our favourite things to do when we travel. Time flies when we walk through the aisles. So many brand new items jumping out at us, most we don't know what they are, most likely fish related. One thing that Lars has made me better at is trying new things, even if it is awful, we have still tried it. We got something that was in the shape of a love heart, turns out it was the heart of an angle because that sweet treat gave me wings. Like a mini custard tart that crumbles and dissolves in your mouth at the same time. Good thing it's cold in Sweden because we can cover up all our delicious eating.
Just past another adorable suburb, we crossed the rails to the Gamla Uppsala Carpark. We were given permission to film in the museum for The Touring Teacher, we felt extremely priveledged. Not only were we allowed in 2 hours earlier, we were guided through the museum by the head Archaeologist. She gave us all the background information, and so much more than what is on the signs. They dressed me up in Viking Wears and I was able to share all my knowledge about Vikings to the camera. We finished off the filming outside, then went to have a play around ourselves. But first, tea. Into the most precious cafe for Tea and a rest. Everything was in the theme of floral, with some Viking memorabilia here and there.
We climbed upon the burial mounds to get a great view of the landscape, the Cathedral just peeping out on the horizon. Before we left, we needed to recreate the infamous photo of Lars on Graeme's shoulders. I don't know how I did it, but I managed to carry him... Just kidding!
Next stop was the small town of Danmark. This is where Lars' Morfar (Grandfather) grew up. We were able to see the grave stone of Bengt, and his parents Brita and Torstan. We were unsure if the church would be open, but I pulled on the door handle and in we went. There was no one else around. It was all to ourselves, a very special feeling. This church is where Lars' Grandma and Morfar had their wedding, I could picture it all in my head, as if we where there. I wish that I could invent a time machine to be able to go back to special occasions like that.
The school was just around the corner, there was the old school and the new school across the courtyard. In the playground is a giant Viking Longboat to play in. We saw the house that Bengt's family lived in, and later found out that they lived in the flat above the school for ten years. Brita was the school teacher for the area. We followed some signs that lead us up some back streets. Turns out we were in Carl Linneus' hometown as well.
Unsure of what to do next, we ended up driving to a giant IKEA, much nicer than the one we have near our house. Next door was a humongous Coop Supermarket, another chance to look around at all the exciting foods that are regular here. Back to our airbnb to drop off the car, then we walked our way into the centre of town. We had been told about the Swedish version of Mac Donalds that is doing better than Mc D's. It was a must! It was delicious. Lars described it as if Wendy's and In-n-Out Burger had a baby and brought it up in Sweden. The sauce was like Big Mac sauce but with what tastes a bit like caviar in it. We ordered something on the menu that was a bit of a gamble, it was either going to be baby carrots or mini sausages. Luckily it was carrots! With bellies full, we made our way home for a long sleep.
God Natt!
