Dear NOLA,
I know we have only just met but I feel that I can call you by your nickname.
From first arriving in Louisiana there was a change in the air, and of course in the number plates! Shortly before making your acquaintance we met your little sister Baton Rouge, the "Tauranga of Louisiana". Situated right on the Mississippi, with its small streets, railway, and adorable waterfront it really had a Bay of Plenty feel!
Finally it was time to say hello. I must admit that I was a little nervous at first. I had heard stories of you chewing up and spitting out young men like myself. But as we drew nearer I began to feel a little more easy.
The Super 8 Motel was our first taste of Nawleens hospitality. The three ladies manning the front desk were possibly the nicest people I have ever dealt with. With their thick Cajun accents they set out to let us in on off of your secrets. Between them and our Uber driver on the way in to the French Quarter that evening I don't think you had anything left to hide.
We spent the first few hours on Frenchmans Street. Eating hot dogs, dancing to the jazz in many a smoky dive, and admiring the street performers. It was love at first sight. Unlike anywhere I had ever been, you are the real deal NOLA. Nothing fake, just real, honest, and gritty, with a charm that could woo even the squarest of cats.
After getting our fill we decided to head to the party; Bourbon Street. You offered us a ride on one of your many bicycle tuk tuks. Our guide once again held nothing back, not only did he divulge more secrets, but he also delved deep into your rich and exotic history. We were dropped off in the heart of the biggest and most exciting street party I have ever witnessed, the occasion; Thursday! Just a Thursday, but you could have sworn it was Mardi Gras, I can't even begin to fathom what you must be like in February.
You were noisy, colourful, and full of life. We first stop in at one of your many 'take away' drink stalls. Just walking out of a place on to the street with a drink in your hand is a very new concept to me, but one that works so well. We grooved to '80s classics, Top 40, Electronica, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Street Music, you name it. There really is something for everyone in the Big Easy.
Laura and I earned beads from the balconies above, she flashed a smile, while I had to flash a man nipple! We saw a man with a cat on his head to the delight of Laura, we saw people dressed for Halloween, we saw every type of person imaginable all mashed together smiling, laughing, dancing, and singing.
New Orleans, you treated us so well that night, it was a night I will never forget. And although we only had a brief fling, I know that my love affair with you will continue. Laura and I will be back one day soon, to party the night away!
New Orleans, I love you.
Steamboat Laura.
Dat Dog! Thanks for the best hot dog ever!
Just a cheeky Thursday night.
Cat Man, just one of the casual NOLA residence...
