The mountains looked so far away. Way in the distance as we cruised down Freeway 15. But then we were there, already in the hills! How? An illusion thats how. The smog from L.A. made everything seem so much further away.
Laura and I woke eager to leave the City of Angels. Happy to have the grime, and smoke, and humidity behind us. Our little over three hour drive was our first taste of what driving across America would be like. It was great, open highway all the way. The occasional desert town suddenly forming around us, not simply a mirage in heat. Laura too had her first taste at driving on the wrong side of the road (I still maintain the we drive on the 'right' side). It felt good to take the passengers seat and have a chance to sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Viva Las Vegas played shortly before we entered Sin City. The first and most pleasant thing we noticed was the bone drying lack of humidity. Praise the desert gods! A perfect hot day and no sweat.
After a few hours of admin, shopping, and getting ready it was finally time to head out. We had been given a cheeky little engagement present and told to spend it recklessly! And that's exactly what we planned on doing. Since the Elvis impersonator was off sick at the Chapel O' Love we decided marriage can hold off, lets win some money!
We hit all the High Roller rooms in all the major casinos. We felt like all we needed was a crew with a witty name; Quickfall's 11? Bills went into slots, we lost, we won, we drank free drinks. I think at the end of the evening we were about even. We only spent as much as the free drinks would have cost, and if you exclude our 3am stop at White Castle (yes it's real, and yes there we're plenty of Harold and Kumar references!) we did pretty well.
And you fair reader did pretty well too. I considered just writing "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas"! Desert day two here we come.
